Today was a rather nice Sunday morning and Robin Wong invited me to join him on a tour through the Butterfly Park of Kuala Lumpur.
Unfortunate circumstances made this slightly more difficult (he forgot to message me until last night and I forgot to charge my phone, so I only got the message this morning, haha), but eventually I arrived and joined Robin, Jackie, Carmen and Calvin on their photo tour. However, the target was not, as one might be tempted to conclude, butterflies. Instead the objective was to take macro shots of insects, such as spiders, crickets but also flowers and the occasional butterfly.
The Raynox DCR 150 worked beautifully together with the Olympus M.Zuiko 45mm f1.8 – which was stepped down to f5.6 in most of the pictures. However, it is too small to snap onto the 37mm thread of the 45mm lens. Thus I had to use the lens hood attached and snap the Raynox into the lens hood. Since there is no thread to grab into, it came loose every now and then and the Raynox dropped on the floor several times. Not to worry, it did not get scratched, but I need to figure out how to properly attach the Raynox to the 45mm in future.
Of course I also took a number of shots of my fellow photographers as well, which you could consider “behind the scenes”. After the shooting session, we went to a an overpriced café, which shall remain unknown, to have a light lunch and some coffee. I had a lot of fun and it was amazing meeting these people.
As a location I can say: if you are into macro shots and insects while you don’t want to spend an entire day driving out into the forest, it is quite a great spot. If you are going to see exotic butterflies, it might be somewhat disappointing. It does, despite being a beautifully arranged place, lack in the department of variety. There are not too many different species, as far as I can tell (but I am by no means a butterfly expert!).
